Abstract Realism is at the heart of Kimberleigh Wood's artistic expression. Wood combines the abstract and the real, creating a visual language that speaks to the viewer's emotions and imagination.
Through her work, she strives to capture the unseen essence of reality, diving deeper than the surface appearance. Her paintings are a dance between the tangible and intangible, blurring the lines between what is seen and what is felt. With her bold mark-making and dynamic use of color, Wood transports the audience to a realm where the concrete and the ethereal coexist harmoniously. Her art invites us to explore the hidden layers within ourselves and the world around us, reminding us that reality is not confined to what meets the eye.
“Where I’m from, Los Angeles is a land of fantasy and fault lines. The neighborhoods have literally reshaped into something else every 20 years. They are torn down and rebuilt with the regularity of a Hollywood sound stage. In LA it’s not hard to be detached, unsentimental. This might explain my seeking for permanence in a place of constant change.
After growing up and living so many years in Los Angeles, I made the move in 2019 to San Juan Capistrano. My muse is the coastal region of California. Inspiration blooms as I wander through this place with deep and tangled roots. Working with a wash of acrylic paint overlayed with oil-based pigments, scribbles and scratches, I craft my compositions with bright, deconstructed shapes, textured with muted tones. My pictures make a memory tangible for the viewer to step into and wander through.”
